Rogue Maine Wave Captures 20 Tourists
In Maine: a rogue wave from Hurricane Bill sweeps tourists off of Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park: 9 people were in hospital after 20 people were swept out to sea: all have been rescued:
The spectators had gathered at Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park, about five miles south of Bar Harbor, the Coast Guard said. The spot is a popular tourist attraction, where waves crashing into a rugged granite crevice can create thundering reverberations and high salt sprays.
The wave hit about 12:03 p.m., the Coast Guard said. While most of the spectators were able to come ashore on their own, five people had to be rescued, the Coast Guard said. Rescuers used a 47-foot boat to pull three people from the water, the Coast Guard said. [ full NYT article ]
