The Prisoner… Patrick McGoohan, Dead! Where will the funeral take place?
A sad day for all on this island called earth… Patrick McGoohan, A man of many convictions, observations, and talents, and the extended prisoner tv show has departed, at age 80 in Los Angeles, city of Angels, ala the Daily Breeze… so let the (private) funeral bells toll…. Mr. Panoticon “I am not a number, I am a free man!” is now free. Like combining the best of Alfred Jarry, Kafka, Stanislaus Ignacy Witkiewicz, Richard Foreman, Stanislaus Lem and thousands of others too numerous to mention. I cant believe the NYTimes doesnt have his obituary up yet… (update: they do now. slackers!) But thanks to the yootoob, and the Noosphere, he will live on… lets hope AMC TV doesnt believe their own hype, or crossmedia marketing madison avenue jabberwocky. But first, a few quotes:
Great Patrick McGoohan Quotes:
- I think progress is the greatest enemy on Earth… next to oneself.
- If I knew where I was sailing from I could calculate where I was sailing to.
- Unlike me, many of you have accepted the situation of your imprisonment, and will die here like rotten cabbages.
- Retiring Number 2: I can think of better ways to die. Number 6: And better causes to die for.
- We’re run by the Pentagon, we’re run by Madison Avenue, we’re run by television, and as long as we accept those things and don’t revolt we’ll have to go along with the stream to the eventual avalanche… As long as we go out and buy stuff, we’re at their mercy. We’re at the mercy of the advertiser and of course there are certain things that we need, but a lot of the stuff that is bought is not needed… We all live in a little Village… Your village may be different from other people’s villages but we are all prisoners. And finally, a confused Number Two, actually, the second stand in Number Two, remembers the filming of “Its Your Funeral”:
.
He was a perspectival character. Sorely missed.
